Ghost Ship

Clay, glaze

11 × 11 × 5 inches

More Info:

Ghost Ship refers to a past where ships moved by wind in sails. Old stories speak of derelict vessels that had no living people aboard, such as the legend of the Flying Dutchman. This skeletal ship sculpture brings to mind a fearful moment for sailors at sea.

Bio:

I have created multiple series of works, variations on a theme. Carved hollow clay spheres were my focus for years using geometric and organic design motifs. Textured wall-hanging portraits are often labeled as tree spirits due to the bark-like texture becoming another direction. Plant based forms are a recurring concept, often using succulents, cactus and corral as inspiration. Currently making ceramic sculpture that explores an expression of movement and openness.

Statement:

I have been making art for more than fifty years, exploring a wide range of mediums and techniques. Sculpture in clay has become the most rewarding and enduring focus of my work.

My practice includes a series of textured ceramic portraits. These works are deeply connected to my lifelong relationship with the forest. Time spent walking miles through the woods instilled a lasting sensitivity to natural environments and their quiet presence.

In other clay works various sculptural directions are explored. Emotionally responding to the material, I find unexpected inspiration. Working on a series fosters variations on a specific theme. These themes change and evolve over time. Creative exploration has been a constant in my artistic practice.
