Statement:

Moonlit Night And, In The Shadows, The Ghost of Bannerman Island’ exemplifies my appreciation for German expressionist films and expressionist art. Light, shadow, angles, the air of mystery and the potential for something other-worldly to emerge from the shadows. And when nothing emerges it’s just as effective. It’s still spooky. Expressionism with a tiny dose of Imagination injects substance into things real and unreal. ‘Check It Out? Or Turn Around?’ asks the question every move-goer wishes characters would ask themselves when they happen upon an abandoned house in the woods or a decrepit industrial building off the beaten path. The audience knows the answer but the characters never seem to get it right. And so the movie continues. But this ain’t a movie. This is real. What’s your answer going to be? For multiple reasons the movie left an impression on me and ‘The Way Out?’ is my expressionist homage to the 2005 movie ‘Hostel’ and the times we’ve been in cellars and sensed something could happen and if we were in a movie, something would happen.
