Artist Bio
Jaili Ramirez is a New York based painter whose work is rooted in memory, emotion, and the reclaiming of personal and collective stories, culture, and self. Through both abstract and figurative painting, she explores themes of loss, belonging, and stories that often go untold. Drawing from family history, spiritual imagery, and lived experience, her work uses layered brushstrokes and rich, intuitive color to create spaces that feel restorative and reflective. Ramirez’s paintings invite viewers to slow down and sit with self-compassion, tenderness, and an acknowledgment of resilience. Through painting, she seeks to honor overlooked narratives and offer moments of rest, connection, and return.
Artist Statement
I created this painting during a period of transition, after losing my job and having to defer the dream of owning a home. The work became a way to process feelings of anger and uncertainty about the future. Through the push and pull of materials and the physical act of painting, I was able to reconnect with my own resilience and sense of hope.

I taught for 21 years an Adjunct Professor of Art at the College of Mount Saint Vincent in Riverdale, New York, and retired in 2023. Currently, I am now an instructor of photography and drawing at Railyard Art Center in Croton Falls, NY. My teaching approach has always been to emphasize the multi-disciplinary nature of the creative process to cognitive philosophy, psychology and, really, to all the humanities. Put more simply, stressing cognitive science as a portal into the origins of artistic creativity from an evolutionary perspective.
My personal imagery explores the fluid boundaries between representational and abstraction in Nature, discovering a new awareness and appreciation of beauty and what is worth looking at.
Artist Statement
On the Edge: This unconventional composition, painted from life, is a collection of very personal, symbolic objects that represent my interests and motivations as an artist.
Curator’s Note: Jaili Ramirez’s beautiful abstract painting, Sublimation, feels like standing in a slurry of emotion and being pulled along in the wind of it all. The strong colors push out from a haze and I can’t help but notice a figure emerging from the midst of it all, finding hope through fortitude. I am incredibly excited to share that Jaili Ramirez has as solo exhibition scheduled for March at Arbor Gallery. The artist will be bringing her standout portraits of indigenous women, a perfect show for International Women’s Month.
